Fishing village and GREAT FOOD!

Cabuya has a good population of local fishermen that provide reasonable fishing and snorkeling tours, fresh fish sold right out of their homes (and provided daily to our local restaurants). Our little restaurants have some of the best food in Costa Rica at more reasonable prices than some of the very touristy areas. Freshed baked good are made daily at our excellent bakery, wood fired pizza (and other excellent seafood and local dishes) can be found at Coyote Cafe. The bakery cafe serves a large variety of seafood/fish dishes, vegetarian choices, sushi, pasta and more. Marvin's restaurant has amazing fajitas, fish, chicken, quesadillas and more! El Rancho Restaurant has amazing ceviche, gallo pinto and typical casados. Delfines restaurant has daily choices of typical home cooking. Our local saloon, Bar Higueron serves beverages with or without alcohol and serves free bocas (appetizers) and often hosts live music and other events.

Cabuya is a tranquil, authentic, Costa Rican oceanside village that sits at the entrance to Cabo Blanco National Rainforest Park. The village is an interesting mix of very friendly Costa Ricans, international travelers and residential ex-pats. It is an eco-tourism experience!

About Cabuya!

Cabuya Island and other great attractions

Cabuya is known mostly for Cabuya Island, which is a snorkeling destination and Cabo Blanco national Park, which is a great hiking destination, however, there are many different hiking opportunities in Cabuya (water fall hikes, mountain hikes, hiking into Montezuma, along rivers and tide pools, etc). Local horse owners offer a variety of horseback riding tours (beach, mountain, etc) and you can rent ATV's, ocean kayaks and fishing and snorkeling gear as well! At low tide, you can walk out to the Island and jump off into deeper water, or fish from the edges. The center of the island contains the village cemetary, which is a very interesting place to visit as well! In Playa Sedro, the north end of Cabuya, you will find good surfing opportunites. Many local area surfers provide lessons for those who are beginners.  A local bus travels along the ocean several times daily between Montezuma and Cabuya, making it easy to access several beach and tide pool options, ziplining, more shopping and restaurant options!

A Variety of Ocean Choices

The oceanside that is right in the village tends to be rocky, so entering with watershoes is recommended, however, it is a safe ocean for swimming as there are no big riptides or undertows. At high tide, the water comes right up to the end of the beach and you can be swimming with just a few steps in. At low tide, you can walk out to the island and jump off into deep water to swim or snorkel. As you walk up the beach, you will find a variety of sand, swimming, fishing and surfing beaches, as well as some great tide pools! This continues for the entire four miles to Montezuma, which also has lovely beaches. If you drive over the hill, to the west, you will reach the town of Mal Pais/Santa Theresa in about 4 miles, which has expanses of swimming and surfing beaches as well!

Amazing Plant Life

Sometimes we are reminded of the gardens depicted in Dr. Seuss's children's books, or maybe Avatar...when we look around in the Cabuya Area! This tree is in Cabuya and is estimated to be the oldest tree in Central America (perhaps 1000 years old!). It is a Higueron tree (Strangler fig) and this is only a small section of the bottom! There are fruit trees growing everywhere, exotic plants, flowers and palms  and more!

Amazing Animal Life!

Several varieties of monkeys can be seen, if you only look up! You can hear the howler monkeys making their sounds at dusk and in the morning. One vistor reported seeing over 130 varieties of birds, right on the property of Casa Tranquilo! Iguana's, armadillos, koati's, ant eaters and more can often be spotted if you keep your eyes open. Butterflies abound and you can often see whales, dolphins and sea turtles right at Cabuya Beach!
